Some Anarchist Arguments

After months of thinking about and researching political philosophy, I’ve finally concluded that Anarchy is what I believe to be the best (and possibly only) option for true liberty.

There are essentially two opposing political viewpoints- Anarchism and Statism.  Or as I’ve come to realize, Freedom and Slavery.

To better explain my reasoning, first we must establish that individuals are the only acting unit in society.  Nothing more or less than a single person can take an action.  “Goverment”, “humanity”, “the United States of America”, etc can not act.  For example the government does not make a decision, the USA does not go to war, humanity does not develop new technologies.  These are all things done by individuals even if they are acting with others. So to make a single acting entity out of many people is to manipulate the reality of the situation with language.

And therefore, if only individuals act, how can we say that any one person is superior to the others and entitled to control them?  Why should government people have power over the governed people? We are human beings created equally.  No one has the right to make decisions about another persons life.  The idea of government seems ridiculous and begins to break down when we look at it this way.

Everyone has rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  We must grant others the freedom to live their lives however they want (as long as their actions do not violate anothers rights). Even if their choices appear immoral, self-destructive, or stupid, we can’t argue that we are so superior that we have the right to tell them what’s best. There is not one person who has never made a mistake.  And not only is it wrong to tell people what to do, but these orders from the government people need to be enforced.

It’s clear that one should not kill or imprison another person. But if government people did not enforce their laws by killing or imprisoning, government could not exist. For example, say they give an order and someone says “no”. Then they need to use force against that person.  Then let’s say this person defends himself with force.  As it escalates, eventually the government people need to either kill or imprison the person or their government loses its power and ceases to exist. Since they should not kill or imprison, their government should not exist.

There will never be 100% agreement among people in a society about what rights everyone should have.  Some want the right to bear arms, others don’t.  Some want the right to engage in prostitution, others don’t.  Everyone wants to pick and choose what rights should be allowed in order to achieve their desired society. But no one has the same views of how society should be.  Therefore, there is no way to respect everyone’s rights and to get everyone’s desired results.  So you must abandon one or the other.  Anarchy abandons the results while every form of government abandons the rights.

Governments are inherently evil by virtue of the fact that in order to exist they must control, tax, imprison and kill people. The argument should not be which form of government works best, because in the end they are all wrong.  There must be no government at all in order to achieve true liberty for every individual person.
